The group meets on Monday’s at a member’s home – please contact the church office for details.
The group is currently reading Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life by Richard Rohr. Copies of the book are available for $15 on Sunday mornings, or from the church office. Homework for the group will consist of reading 20 to 25 pages per week. Here’s what is says on the book flap: “In the first half of life, we are naturally and rightly preoccupied with establishing our identity – climbing, achieving and performing. But those concerns will not serve us as we grow older and begin to embark on a further journey, one that involves challenges, mistakes, loss of control, broader horizons, and necessary suffering that actually shocks us out of our prior comfort zone. Eventually we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way.”
This book discussion class has been reading The Gospel of Thomas: the Gnostic Wisdom of Jesus. They are taking a break from this book to read Falling Upward and participate in an Advent Study and they will resume the Thomas study after Christmas. You will need a copy of the book The Gospel of Thomas by Jean-Yves LeLoup. Those attending this study will read the next section of the book at home and come prepared to discuss it. The class will continue meeting until the book is finished. This is a book study that requires a comfort level with ambiguity and with ideas that challenge some of our traditional beliefs. If you find that some of the ideas that make sense to you are not in the mainstream of what you have heard in church and you enjoy an environment that is accepting of those “out of the box” ideas, then this may be the class for you. Otherwise, try one of our other more traditional classes!
