We have a number of opportunities for hands-on mission, and several local groups that we support financially.
Diaper Project – Sierra Pines UMC is a distribution center for the Nevada County Diaper Project. A small supply of about 12 diapers (depending on the diaper size) will be given out for each baby each week. Diapers may be picked up on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Church Office. Proof of residency in Nevada County as well as a birth certificate or baby’s age and diaper size will be needed to register. Click here for more information.
Emergency Food Closet – On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to Noon, a bag of one-time emergency non-perishable food can be picked up from our office. [Food on an ongoing basis is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Interfaith Food Ministry in Grass Valley.]
Feeding the Homeless – On Thursday mornings at 7.30 a.m., we send a group of people to a parking lot at the DeWitt Center, First Street in Auburn to give away fruit and cold drinks to the homeless, while the non-profit What Would Jesus Do, Inc. serves breakfast.
Hospitality House – Every 5th Saturday of the month, we cook and serve the evening meal at Hospitality House, our local homeless shelter in Grass Valley. We support their work financially throughout the year, and give them some of the produce from our vegetable garden.
Interfaith Food Ministry – We are a member church of the Interfaith Food Ministry in Grass Valley and we support them financially. Our members are encouraged to volunteer there, and we refer those in need of services to IFM who distribute food on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Habitat for Humanity – On the second Saturday of each month, we prepare and deliver lunch to the volunteers in Grass Valley working on the latest Habitat for Humanity house.
Women of Worth – At Christmas we adopt several families being helped by Women of Worth and purchase gifts for them.
Local Schools – Each summer we put together backpacks and school supplies for children in need at our local elementary, middle and high school.
PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) – We support both the Nevada County PFLAG and the Placer County PFLAG in their work with parents, family, friends, and allies of the LGBTQ community. Our pastor is the PFLAG liaison with the Bear River High School GSA.
United Methodist Volunteers in Mission – From time to time our members join up with United Methodist Volunteers in Mission teams from around the conference to assist as needed in repairing churches and homes, often after natural disasters.
Care-a-Vaners – Some of our members with RVs travel as Care-A-Vaners to a variety of churches and camps around California to work on painting, repairs and landscaping.
