Choices Really Matter

The Israelites were feeling discouraged that what they were building was not going to be as big and elaborate as what they had before. It’s not going to be great like it used to be. How often have Christians nowadays bemoaned that our congregations are not like they are used to be? Worship attendance is down. It is easy to get discouraged like the Israelites did. (Haggai 1:15b-2:9)

Watch and Wait

Habakkuk is a book that is very similar to the book of Job, although Job is a lot longer. Job protests to God about all the bad things that are happening in his life, and tries to understand why they are happening. Habakkuk is doing the same thing but instead of protesting about personal problems he is concerned with the injustice in the nation. (Habakkuk 1:1-4, 2:1-4)

Rend Your Hearts

We might not be troubled by physical locusts in our lives, although there are those around the world who are. But metaphorically, there are plenty of things that are destructive in our lives, some of which we have contributed to. In ancient times they would put on a public display of tearing their clothes and wearing sackcloth to publicly show their remorse. Joel is saying that it is more important to examine our hearts. (Joel 2:12-14, 23-32)
