You are encouraged to buy one of these two books for use as a Daily Advent Devotional to go along with our Advent/Christmas sermon series All I Want for Christmas. Limited copies will be available from the church office from November 19, or order from your favorite bookstore.
All I Really Want: Readings for a Modern Christmas by UCC pastor Quinn G. Caldwell. Suggested book donation: $12. This book is playful and funny and theologically profound: “Let’s get one thing straight: this book is not going to help you ‘simplify the season.’ It’s not going to help you throw a stress-free Christmas party or create the Best Christmas Ever in five easy steps. I’m not here to simplify anything for you. Neither is God. If you have too many cookie exchanges or whatever, you’re just going to have to find a way to deal with that yourself. This book is actually designed to complicate the season. It’s here to invite you to think and pray a little more deeply about it. So although this book is here to add things to your to-do list, not to take them away, I hope that the doing of them will create room – maybe just enough room – for God to show up. I don’t know about you, but this year, that’s all I really want.”
Night Visions: Searching the Shadows of Advent and Christmas by UMC pastor Jan L. Richardson. Suggested donation: $20. This book has a more contemplative approach with some rich poetry, prayers and beautiful illustrations to draw the reader into the quiet spaces of an often-frenzied season. Its writings beckon us to encounter the God who dwells in darkness as well as in daylight and will make us think deeply about our interior faith journey.
