May 7-11, 2018, a group of 13 people from Northern California began a week of VIM (Volunteers in Mission) work at UMCOR Depot West, Salt Lake City, Utah. The group was a collaboration between four churches: Auburn Pioneer UMC, Grass Valley UMC, Quincy UMC and Sierra Pines UMC. Participants were Chris & John Boykin, Lynn & Susie Caudle, Carolyn Dowdy, George & Cheri Eckholt, Ray Jellison, Dan & Susan Kopp, John & Rosann Mackey, Rev. Joan Pell. The group arrived at various times and stayed at three different locations: KOA of Salt Lake City, Christ UMC in Salt Lake City, and Best Western Plus, Airport Inn and Suites, Salt Lake City.

Our work week began on Monday, May 7th at 8:00 AM with prayer, a word for the day and orientation by UMCOR Director, Rev. Brian Diggs. We learned about some changes to UMCOR’s relief supply process. Then began a week of counting over 21,400 band aids to add to the existing over 40,000 hygiene kits. Additionally, we had the opportunity to work on Wednesday at Welfare Square with the LDS community followed by a free afternoon of each participant’s choice of sight-seeing. In the sewing room, fabric wraps were made for local homeless youth who were displaced due to their sexual orientation. Friendships, sharing, morning and nightly devotions by Pastor Joan, awesome meals planned by Chris Boykin at Christ UMC, a BBQ at the KOA on Wednesday night, Thursday night dinner at Old Spaghetti Factory followed by a free rehearsal of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir were all part of this mission experience.

We ended our trip at noon on Friday, May 11, 2018 after communion at UMCOR Depot West with Rev. Diggs. We were able to complete 5355 hygiene kits to make them ready for distribution for emergencies, with two pallets immediately heading to Arizona for distribution to refugees.  Our quilt makers sewed 5 quilts. We then had lunch at Victor’s Tire Center (an experience unto itself). We were called to be servants of our Lord, and the team did as they were called. Next VIM trip…..stay tuned!
